Mount Vesuvius is an active volcano located near Naples, Italy. It is famous for its eruption in AD 79, which destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as several other nearby settlements.
Mount Vesuvius is classified as a complex stratovolcano and is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world due to its proximity to densely populated areas. It has erupted several times since the eruption in AD 79, with the most recent major eruption occurring in 1944.
